When to use 2 PDF pages per sheet
Two-up is the safest compact layout when you still need comfortable reading space. It suits articles, workbook pages, handouts, meeting notes, and slide decks with smaller text. Each output sheet carries two original pages, reducing paper while leaving room to scan and annotate.
Creating the two-up file first also avoids differences between printer dialogs. You can preview the arrangement once, download it, and print the same compact PDF later from any standard viewer.
A readable side-by-side arrangement
Landscape output usually gives two source pages enough width for headings, diagrams, tables, and notes. Portrait is available when the source shape or planned paper handling makes a vertical sheet more useful.
Check the preview at a realistic size before printing. If the text feels too small, return to one page per sheet in your viewer; if the result leaves too much space, the four-up layout may be a better fit.
Make wide borders useful again

Documents with handwritten marks or footnotes near an edge deserve a careful preview. You can turn trimming off without choosing the file again, and the original PDF remains unchanged.
